April Falls Day®/Month

One in three older adults in the community falls each year and admissions to hospital have increased over the last 10 years. Falls can be serious and may lead to long term hospitalisation, loss of independence, the need for supported care and premature death in some cases. Falls can be prevented.

This year, the NSW Falls Prevention Program theme for April Falls Day® is: Medication and falls: Medicate right to stay upright.  Older people are more susceptible to side effects from medications. These can include; drowsiness, dizziness, poor balance, blurred vision which may lead to a fall. Taking multiple medications regardless of what they are, may increase a person’s fall risk.

The Clinical Excellence Commission, NSW Falls Prevention Program has developed a suite of resources for health staff, patients and people in the community.  These include posters, presentations and a range of flyers including one on medications, available in a few community languages (Arabic, Greek, Italian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Vietnamese). These resources can be accessed at: http://bit.ly/1pACSlD
